Typing Test

Recently, while preparing an assessment of my students’ employment and digital workplace habits, we ran into a familiar wall: the legacy typing app installed on our lab PCs was glitching, non-functional, and bloated. The standard institutional path would have been to file an IT ticket, wait weeks for administrative approval, or adapt to an ad-ridden commercial alternative behind a paywall.

Instead, I decided to build a solution myself. In a single evening, I “vibecoded” a clean, lightweight typing test application designed specifically for our assessment needs—and hosted it open-access right here on the blog. Every student could access it instantly on any device, free of distraction, without needing to involve the IT department or navigate institutional bureaucracy.

Try the Tool

The app is freely available for anyone to use in their own classroom, training module, or personal practice. The tool contains 2 default texts for practice, and you can use your own .txt files. When the test finishes, you can generate a printout with the statistics. Currently, the interface of the typing test is only available in German. I may add a language selector later, but no promises.
